Den væsentligste linje heri er forsøget på at trænge ind til det essentielle og at trænge &quot;bag om tingene&quot;. De tidlige oliebilleder fra Vejle Fjord fra 1930rne er mørke og stoflige, og naturen fremstilles her i et ekspressivt formsprog. Efter årene i København 1935-46, bosatte D. sig i Gadbjerg vest for Vejle. De nære omgivelser blev nu tillige med indtryk fra rejser i det nordatlantiske område hans foretrukne motiver. Stofligheden bevaredes i 1960ernes billeder af brandtomter, de såkaldte &quot;Brandbilleder&quot; og malerierne af tørvemosen, mens han i sine opstillinger med hverdagsting som sømkasser, kartofler, knoglefragmenter og rustne jernplader vægtede de abstrakte muligheder i motiverne højere. Han fremstillede de ofte oversete hverdagsting med et usædvanligt skarpt blik for strukturer og stoflighed i sine daglige omgivelser. Den fotografiske nøjagtighed har aldrig været D.s ærinde.
