Øen havde i middelalderen dels været i kronens eje, sat i pant til et tysk hertugdømme og tilhørt de katolske biskopper i Aarhus. I 1700-tallet hørte Endelave under herregården Stensballegaard ved Horsens, og herefter blev den solgt til private, herunder ovennævnte Schildknecht.<br /> <br /> Georg Ditlev Schildknecht sammenlagde to af øens gårde, og han lod bygge gården Louisenlund langt øst for Endelave landsby ude ved Lynger Hage i 1797. Alle bygninger fra dengang er siden fornyet. Senere blev endnu en gård lagt ind under Louisenlund. Fra 1840 begyndte øens landmænd at frikøbe sig. I de følgende årtier frem til 1880 blev de øvrige ca. 40 fæstegårde og en del husmandssteder solgt til selveje. Louisenlund forblev i slægtens eje frem til 1903, hvor den blev solgt på tvangsauktion. <br /> <br /> Derefter fulgte en række hastigt skiftende ejere af gården. I 1938-39 ejede Statens Jordlovsudvalg Louisenlund, og på en del af gårdens store arealer skabtes en række husmandsbrug. I foråret 1948 købte selskabet [[Børnenes Vel]] i Vejle gården med tilliggende. I 1904 blev den velgørende forening stiftet i Vejle, og i 1923 oprettede Børnenes Vel en feriekoloni på [[Hvidbjerg]]. Foreningen udvidede i 1948 yderligere sine aktiviteter med feriekolonien Louisenlund på Endelave. Louisenlund feriekoloni var for drenge fra svagt stillede hjem. <br /> <br /> I 1966 blev den sidste børnehjælpsdag afholdt i Vejle. I 1969 sendte Børnenes Vel de sidste hold skolebørn fra Vejle på feriekoloni på Endelave. Samme år overtog [[Vejle Kommune]] Louisenlund.<br /> <br /> Endelave ø udgør Endelave Sogn, som indtil kommunalreformen i 1970 hørte ind under Nim Herred og Skanderborg Amt.
